Indeed we did Freddo, but I think the "Peel deal" is more about the WAFC saving face in light of their initial decision to allow Peel into the WAFL - nothing more. I certainly would like to re-visit the list of criteria & the reasons for their decision in expanding the competition to 9 teams. It probably looked good on paper, but was proper due diligence carried out or was most of it a lot of wishful thinking on the WAFC part? The logic of allowing them in perplexes me. With the introduction of a 2nd AFL team from Perth around the same time, what were they possibly thinking? I recall someone else mentioned on this or the other board that they were hoping for a team from either Bunbury or Kalgoorlie (neither accepted of course) and that Peel was an afterthought. If that was the case, then you can bet your bottom dollar that it was simply a case of grandstanding on the WAFC's part & that certain egos got in the way of making a sound business decision. Perhaps they were also hoping that some metro teams would merge - fat chance of that ever happening given the history behind each of the traditional clubs......the WAFL website has indicated that it is a "short-term" loan. That indicates to me that it should be repaid within 12 months.
As reported by their Interim President - John Ditchburn on the WAFL website:
"Last year we had the highest growth in participation in the State of 28%. There are now nearly 9,500 people playing football in the district.
"I would very much like to assure our players, supporters and sponsors that we intend to be around and a force to be reckoned with in the near future."
Participation rates doesn't mean a football club is financially successful. What he's saying is basically nothing & it will certainly be interesting to see how they intend to repay the loan in that time frame given their poor supporter-base, lack of on-field success and apparent lack of financial acumen....
It's also been reported that the former CEO of Subiaco FC - Kim Williamson will be acting CEO in the interim. Unfortunately, for him, they don't have a Subiaco Oval arrangement to get them out of the +@!+.......
